Exactly 18 years ago, on September 16, 2003, the presidents of seven Polish grain breeding companies signed a notarial deed in Leszno establishing the first organisation of agricultural plant breeders in the country – Agencja Nasienna Sp. z o.o. Soon, other breeders joined the group of shareholders of Agencja Nasienna: in November 2006 – six companies associated with foreign breeders, and four years later – six potato breeding companies. We currently represent over 30 agricultural plant breeders.
One of the reasons for establishing Agencja Nasienna Sp. z o.o. was the low share of certified seed in the sowing, which had a negative impact on the competitiveness of Polish agriculture compared to other European Union member states. We also took care of other activities related to the protection of the exclusive right to plant varieties, including education and popularization of knowledge about the intellectual property of breeders, control of license agreements and lawful use of agricultural exemption, and monitoring of the grey market in seeding material.
